“Disaster Certificates”　り災証明書

A “Disaster Certificate” is a certificate which can be used as proof that there was damage to your home due to a natural disaster. 

It is necessary to receive financial support, tax exemptions etc. Foreign residents are also eligible for these. 

・In principle, no claim is required for life or damage insurance.

・People who live in rental accommodation may also apply. 

To get a “Disaster Certificate” issued you must provide photos of the damages to your home. 

〇Take photos of the outside of the building from all four sides. 

〇Use a ruler or measuring tape to record how high the flood waters came inside your home. Take a photo of this measurement from close-up and from a distance.

〇Take photos of anything that has been damaged – walls (both inside and out), the ceiling/roof, floor, doors, windows, kitchen, bathroom etc. 

People whose cars suffered damage from flooding

1）Contact your car insurance provider.

・You can postpone payment of your insurance fees.

・Check what your insurance covers and contact your insurance provider. 

・Take photos of the damage to your car.

2）A vehicle which has suffered water damage may produce electric shocks or cause a fire due to a short-circuit in the electronics, even if it physically appears undamaged. 

1．Do not start your car’s engine by yourself. 

2．Contact a maintenance garage or the store you bought the car from before using it.

Hybrid and electric cars are equipped with particularly high-voltage batteries. Do not touch it.
